In 2013, I really didn’t care for MEGI HOUSE, but in 2016 I thought it was better. MEGI HOUSE is the centrepiece of Aichi Prefectural University Arts and Music Setouchi Art Project Team which comprises of students, faculty, and alumni. The actual house is not very interesting but I think it would look good at night, especially with the art by Mitsunori Kurashige. Unfortunately the last ferry leaving Megijima is usually before sunset so unless you camp overnight on the island, it is unlikely that you will ever see it at night.
As you walk to MEGI HOUSE, you will notice the gravel under your feet. The gravel was really interesting as I believe it was made of various clay or earthenware pieces. The various geometric shapes made walking on them strange yet soft at the same time. The design of the entrance was also really good as it forced you through a narrow entrance that really gave a sense that the house would be small, when in fact it is the opposite.
When you enter the foyer of the house you will see a glowing man on your left, which is part of Mitsunori Kurashige’s contribution to MEGI HOUSE. This glowing man gives you a glimpse as to what MEGI HOUSE looks like at night. The blue glow from this guy really adds to the mystery of the house. Once you take off your shoes to go into the house, you can head straight to the artwork inside the house. The artwork has changed for 2016 and it is a bit more interesting. They have taken the blue light theme and added more blue lights inside. In the daytime it is hard to see it but the back room has a couple of strips of blue lights with mirrors on either side to make the blue light seem to run for eternity. I felt that it didn’t run far enough but it was close to it.
There were also a few headphones that were nicely decorated. I couldn’t understand the Japanese well enough but from my memory it was nothing more than voices of the locals, so the message was lost on me.
There is a courtyard for the house and it was almost the same as in 2013. It serves as a place for concerts on various days so if you are in the area at that time check it out as I’m sure it is really fun. Beware that in the heat of summer, the deck of the courtyard is extremely hot. There is a nice tree and a couple of pieces of art in the courtyard as well. The most attractive piece is the red chimney. It isn’t functional as there is a white body lying on the ground and looking up through the chimney. From photos that I have seen, this body glows in the same manner as the “man” in the foyer.
MEGI HOUSE is an interesting place but you really need time to enjoy it. You need time to just look at everything and you need time to enjoy a concert or performance. I really wish I had time to watch a performance at MEGI HOUSE but hopefully in the future that will come true.
