Rotation – Revolution was an artwork that I couldn’t connect with. Lin Tianmiao is a Chinese artist that just doesn’t speak to me. I don’t discredit her work, as art is very subjective, but I just couldn’t get into the artwork. Lin Tianmiao basically took various old objects from the island’s residents and glued them onto rotating axis.
“The installation attempts to add new stories to an empty house.”
The quote from the Setouchi Triennale’s official site really speaks volumes into what the artwork does. It “attempts” to add new stories to an empty house with old objects but to me this is a failed attempt. Perhaps I’m not in tune with her mind or her vision, but I just didn’t like this artwork. There is a lot that connects this artwork to the island but the steady hum of the motors and the objects used really didn’t resonate with me and it is something that I will not bother to see again if it is still on Ogijima.
