Araha Beach is a short walk from American Village in Chatan. I had the luxury of having my hotel just a couple minutes from the beach but unfortunately on my business trip I had no time to really enjoy the beach. It was a lovely beach and I hope the next time I visit I’ll be able to really enjoy it for a full day or at least an afternoon.
Beaches in Okinawa are all lovely but they all have their own unique character. The beaches around American Village were nice but Araha Beach was my favourite. It was relatively quiet and really long so you could easily find your own little area to sit down and enjoy the peace. Unfortunately it was jellyfish season so swimming was not really allowed outside of the netted area.
There is a nice small netted area in the middle of Araha Beach where you could swim. There were lifeguards as well keeping an eye on people and it looked like a great place. They even had a special banana boat and other adventures that departed from the central area of the beach. It also meant that the central area was the busiest area. While I mainly visited on weekdays, it wasn’t terribly busy so you could easily enjoy the beach, compared to the beaches at American Village.
I spent most of my time at the north end of the beach as my hotel was in that area. I was only able to go for 30 minutes but it was a good 30 minutes. I was able to be alone on the beach with no one around me for a good 100 meters. I really loved it, although the heat and humidity meant I wasn’t completely comfortable. A quick dip in the ocean would have helped, but I had to make do with my beer instead.
I really regret that I couldn’t have done more on the beach. On one day, a group of guys were playing beach soccer and I was really jealous. It looked like a fun game and I wanted to join in. Unfortunately I had to get ready for a meeting that day, but I think I’ll be making my way out there again in the future so hopefully I’ll be able to spend more time relaxing on the beach.
