Waiting for / Mr. Inland Sea (Setouchi Triennale)

Waiting for / Mr. Inland Sea is a hidden in plain sight artwork by Jun Honma.  It is a very wonderful concept that is very simple, yet hides itself very well.  You really need to look at this artwork to notice it as you will easily skip it if you don’t know what to look at.

Waiting for / Mr. Inland Sea

Waiting for/Mr. Inland Sea is located at the southern bus loop designed for highway buses and other tour buses for the JR Group.  The artwork is on the side of the bus terminal but it is very well hidden.  It takes up the side of the building in the form of figures.  Jun Honma put cut-outs of people from the islands but instead of using their image he used the image of the rocks that make the facade of the bus terminal.  From afar it is hard to see but when you get up close to it you can see it very easily.

Waiting for – Mr. Inland Sea

The artwork is pretty simple and easy to visit.  You don’t need a lot of time to enjoy it but it is such a fun and playful artwork that I really regret not spending more time with it.  The bus terminal can be busy at times so it can be difficult to appreciate the art with dozens of people buzzing by trying to get tickets and catch their bus.  Be sure to stop for a few seconds to enjoy this artwork as I certainly have.
