Senkoji Park is a large expansive park that covers the top of Mt. Senkoji. It encompasses the Onomichi View Hotel Seizan, the Onomichi City Museum of Art, and of course Senkoji Temple, where the mountain and park gets its name. I didn’t get a chance to see the entire park because I didn’t have time and some areas were just too busy. Being in Onomichi, my goal was to enjoy myself and keep away from most of the crowds. Wherever there were lots of people, I avoided it if possible. Senkoji Park is full of people but there are areas where there aren’t a lot of people.
Getting to Senkoji Park is pretty easy. There are buses and there is a Ropeway. I took one of the several paths that lead up to the park. I took a path that lead from the Onomichi Gaudi House and passed Onomichi Castle before ending up in front of the View Hotel Seizan. I proceeded to take a look at the small lookout and I was the only person there. Very few people will ever visit the View Hotel area, so enjoy it as much as you can.
Once you get to the museum, you will notice a lot of people. Across the way is the main bus depot; you can see busloads of tourists getting off and starting their walk towards the park. The park is one of the best places to see the cherry blossoms in the spring and I heard it was also beautiful in autumn. I may have to return in the autumn someday to enjoy the beautiful sights.
The park also encompasses the Path of Literature. It is a small path that goes from the Ropeway Station, down next to the museum, and past Senkoji before returning to the Ropeway. I took the path of literature to see Senkoji.
You really can’t get an idea of how different the changes in elevation are by looking at a simple map. Regardless, there are some steep hills around Senkoji Park and it really made me lazy. There were some old people just walking around and taking their time as it is strenuous for them. I didn’t have a big problem but it wasn’t easy either.
Senkoji Park is a busy place and not a place to visit if you are looking for peace and quiet. It is a lovely place and the views are also really good. I wonder how beautiful it is during the cherry blossom season and during the autumn season. The more I learn about Onomichi the more I want to revisit and see all of the little things that I did miss. There is just so much to see and do that you can spend years just trying to explore every little nook and cranny and never finish! Be sure to check out Senkoji Park if you are in Onomichi.
