Hotel Cycle is a small hotel located inside the Onomichi U2 complex. It occupies the western half of the complex and it is a very nice hotel. It is very open and very relaxing with a very interesting decor. The dark tones and the woodwork really complement the place and you can even bring your nice expensive bicycle into the hotel overnight if you wish. Actually, all rooms have a location for you to actually hang your bicycle on the wall, if you are really an enthusiast.
Entering the hotel area of Onomichi U2 is pretty easy. There aren’t a lot of barriers between the bakery area and the hotel. The front desk is not so big and there are rooms on both the first and second floor. When I checked it, it was a pretty straightforward situation. I just walked in and in the standard time I had my room ready.
Hotel Cycle has very good service, so the first thing they do is physically walk you up to your room. The room key is really nice as unlike most business hotels, the key fob is small. Like other hotels, the key fob is used for turning on the power. Thankfully it doesn’t shut down the fridge or the outlets so you can keep charging your electronics if you need to.
The rooms at Hotel Cycle are really nice. They keep the dark theme but all of the products are pretty good. The beds are firm but not hard and the pajamas are really comfortable. It is more alike a happi rather than a yukata so it is easier to wear. The bathroom is very western as there is a huge glass wall between the room and the bathroom. Unlike a business hotel the bathroom is luxurious.
When you step into the bathroom the first thing you think is that there really is no privacy. Thankfully they have a curtain to close things up. The bathtub was very big and good for a nice bath. The counter top was also really cool and they had these really nice stone coasters. I had seen them before in a bar I often frequent and was really tempted to take one home. The free toiletries were a little confusing as they weren’t labelled, so it was a little mysterious. The easy ones are the razor and toothbrush, but the other ones were hard to figure out, at least for men. Do be aware that the razor wasn’t very sharp.
You might want to be careful of the toilet. They have a very nice electronic toilet with all the bells and whistles. It was my first time to see a massage function on a toilet and I’ll just say that I felt a little violated trying it out. I wouldn’t use that function again but I really wish I had a similar toilet in my place.
The only downside to the entire room was the carpeting. It was designed to allow bicycles inside the room so the floor was pretty hard. They didn’t use hardwood floors; instead they had a strange hard carpet. It was ribbed all over so that when you walked it felt like a light foot massage. It was really nice but extended use with nothing but my socks was not very comfortable. I’m sure it is great after a day of cycling and you need to relax your feet, but my feet also had a little pain from the carpeting. It was interesting to say the very least.
The common area of Hotel Cycle was really great. On the second floor they had a small lounge area with a couch, a couple tables, and a few seats. While the couch looked very comfortable, I was focused on the tables as it overlooked the entrance. I spent a good amount of time there as it was really quiet and peaceful. If you follow my Instagram account, you will notice I was there a lot.
Hotel Cycle was a great place to stay and I can’t recommend it enough. Even if you aren’t going on the Shimanami Kaido, it is still a great hotel in Onomichi. A business hotel is much cheaper but Hotel Cycle at Onomichi U2 is worth the cost. You get shown to your room; you get high end tea and coffee; and a nice spacious bed. The room also comes with a complimentary drink at the bar, so you can get a glass of beer or wine just before bed. If I am ever in Onomichi again, I will try to stay at Hotel Cycle. It is just a great place to just relax and not worry about the world.
