When I spent a night in Matsusaka, I had to balance finding a hotel that was in a nice location as well as one that was not too expensive. When you go for cheap places, they tend to be a little run down. Business Hotel Maruyama is pretty cheap but it isn’t as run down as you expect it to be and it is located in a decent location that is a short walk from the station.
The first thing you will notice when you get to the hotel is how old it is. It was probably built in the 1960s or 1970s, and looking at the decor, you can tell it was an old building. They have renovated the building a little but it really has an old look to it. The hotel is definitely not foreign friendly as I would assume that they cannot speak any English at this hotel. What it lacks in amenities it definitely makes up for in savings.
Getting to the hotel involves a short walk from the Kintetsu side of the station and heading south along the tracks. It is on the “major” road to the south of the station. When you get there the entrance is pretty small. There is a car park located on the lower floors of the building and the lobby and restaurant occupies a small section of the ground floor.
When you get into the lobby you can see some of the items that show how old the hotel is. There is a very old CRT TV at the entrance that probably doesn’t work. There is also an old kissaten (1970s style Japanese café) next to the lobby where you can get breakfast. The complimentary breakfast is pretty simple as you get a slice of toast, a small salad, and a drink. The best part of the kissaten area is that they have very old massage chairs as well as old video game cabinets, although they don’t work.
Another interesting fact of the hotel is that they occupy the top 2 floors of the building but the elevator only goes to the 4th floor. It is pretty funny to see an elevator with only 2 options. If your room is on the 5th floor you actually have to walk up a floor. At night the hotel is a little scary looking. There isn’t a lot of light and the carpeting is a little dark as well but after going through it the first time you get used to it.
The room that I had was a really nice room. The bed was pretty standard and not that old. There was even a long couch that was a bit old but had a sheet over top to keep you clean. The carpet didn’t seem very clean but considering the fact that the room was so cheap I wasn’t complaining one bit. The lighting was pretty dark overall but when morning came it was pretty bright. You can tell they did a few modifications to the room based on customer complaints but overall it was a good room.
Business Hotel Maruyama is not for everyone. If you love expensive hotels, this isn’t a place for you. If you can’t speak Japanese you may not want to stay here. They will probably try to accommodate you as best they can but it may be a little frustrating at times. I would stay here again because the cost performance is pretty good
