Grill Himawari is a very interesting little shop that I stumbled upon in Matsuyama. It is a typical okonomiyaki style restaurant but their okonomiyaki is a little different to the standard okonomiyaki that you find around Japan. In Osaka, you get little pancake pizzas with everything mixed together. In Hiroshima you get everything layered. Even in Onomichi I found an interesting style where it was basically a Hiroshima okonomiyaki but with some different ingredients. Matsuyama, or Ehime, also has their own style of okonomiyaki called Mitsuhamayaki.
Grill Himawari was the only shop that I saw that was making and selling Mitsuhamayaki in Matsuyama. I’m sure there are other places but with the short time I was there, I really didn’t have time to search for other places. I just went in and enjoyed a little food and drink.
Mitsuhamayaki is a very interesting dish. Assuming that Grill Himawari makes traditional Mitsuhamayaki, then the dish is really good and I can’t wait to have more. It is similar to Hiroshima style okonomiyaki but it is also very different. They have a lot of yaki soba noodles in the middle along with the traditional pork and vegetables but instead of layering everything they actually just wrap it all up. They make a central filling and then they make a crepe like wrap to make everything feel all snug inside.
When you eat Mitsuhamayaki, it is a little difficult and it is messy. It is also difficult to eat one on your own as the volume is pretty big. It tastes very similar to okonomiyaki but the texture is like eating a crepe wrapped around an okonomiyaki filling. It has a different texture that is delicious. If you are in Matsuyama and want to try Mitsuhamayaki, give Grill Himawari a try.
