When I was up in Mito, I spent the entire day doing a Hitachino Nest day. Starting off with the brewery, I brewed my own beer. This was followed by a stay at the bar where I had a few glasses of beer. When I returned to Mito, I quickly checked into my hotel before I returned to Hitachino Nest. Instead of returning to the brewery, I headed to True Brew, their restaurant in Mito.
True Brew is not hard to find. It is located in the new building at Mito Station, on the south side. Located on the 4th floor of Excel Minami, the cafe and bar is in a good location. It is overlooking the entrance of the shopping mall and you can get a lot of good beer and food there.
When you enter, there are 2 entrances, but it is difficult to find the right place. I don’t believe it matters which way you enter, but the left side of the shop appears to be catered to singles while the right side is more suitable for people in groups. Everything has a very warm and modern look, although some of the chairs seem to have been thrown together without much thought. It was still very comfortable and a good place to relax for a while.
You can’t go to True Brew without having some Kiuchi products. They have the full lineup of Hitachino Nest beers. They have a decent selection of beers on tap. The main line-up is always on tap and they change a couple “seasonal” beers between a few of their less popular brews. Even if a specific brew isn’t on tap, you can probably get it in a bottle, although some of their exported brews aren’t available in Japan. You can also get a nice selection of imported beers although this selection changes often.
The food at True Brew is pretty good overall. It is a little upscale and the price reflects this. When I visited, I got their burger because it was relatively reasonably priced. My friend E thought they added a few hops into the burger, which would be an amazing idea. I felt the burger was just okay. The meat was a little too lean and the flavour was nothing special. The best part of the burger was the focaccia bun, but the bun was a little too big, hence the flavour of the beef was muted by the bread.
I did have other dishes at True Brew too. I had a crab bruschetta and a seafood salad. Both were pretty good and hearty. The food at True Brew is a little on the small side for me, especially when I’m drinking, but it was pretty good. Unfortunately, I don’t think the price is worth it for such a small town, but I’m not too concerned with it.
True Brew is a great place to go when in Mito. I have been to a few places in and around Mito and I think True Brew is a good place. If I am back there again, I’ll definitely be back to have a few beers, a little food, and to have a great time.
*Author’s Note: True Brew was the original name of Hitachino Brewing Mito. After renovations in 2017, the renamed this restaurant to Hitachino Brewing Mito. This article was written under the old name but everything remains the same.
