Hinaijidori Hokkoriya, or just Hokkoriya, is a somewhat large restaurant in Hikone on Yume Kyobashi Castle Road.  When visiting Hikone, I arrived before noon and spent most of the lunch hour visiting the castle and garden.  I didn’t get onto Yume Kyobashi Castle Road until 2pm and by then many of the shops were starting to close.  Most of the shops open until 2:30pm for lunch and after that it is nothing but shops selling desserts and tea.  You really do have to be careful of the time in order to get lunch as you wouldn’t want to be too late to get food as they may be closed.  The good thing about waiting until the last minute meant that I could easily find a place to eat and it wasn’t busy.  I had a little trouble finding a good place but I was happy with my selection.  I saw Hokkoriya and thought the food looked good for lunch.

Hokkoriya is a yakitori shop that does a good yakitori.  It is hard for a shop to do a bad job with yakitori.  As long as they have good quality chicken and take care with their sauce, it will almost always taste good.  The chicken is charcoal grilled, and I can attest to that.  There were only two real choices for lunch, the ramen or the oyakodon.  I didn’t feel like having the ramen but it looked very refreshing, rather than the heavy and oily versions I often see.  The oyakodon looked delicious and by surprise it was great.  The egg came cooked just right, nice and runny, and the chicken was well grilled.  Often I get oyakodon with just regular pan fried chicken but since it was a yakitori shop, they grilled the chicken.  Let’s just say I was pleasantly surprised.  The prices are typical tourist area prices, but thankfully the quality was good enough to justify the costs.  If I am back in Hikone, I’ll definitely try this shop again, and if I spend the night there, I just might get some dinner there too.  They even have nice heaters to rest your feet on in the sunken tables.  When you are in Hikone, I can definitely say this is a good restaurant to visit.
