Traders Hotel – Orchard

Traders Hotel (Poolside)

The Traders Hotel is a pretty good hotel that is part of the Shangri-la chain.  I would liken as their more affordable business chain.  Where the Shangri-la is a 5 star hotel, Traders is their 4-star equivalent.  The chain has a lot in common with the main Shangri-la chain, including the level of service.  The Traders Hotel in Orchard is not the best hotel in the world but it is definitely a classy one.  They are not convenient by any standards but being less convenient also means they are better suited to being quiet.  I didn’t mind this hotel at all and would stay there again, but my own personal aspirations are to stay in a different area next time I visit Singapore.  I’m not even sure if I’ll be back again but if I do go back, Traders is definitely on the list of places I would consider again.

The hotel itself is located about 10 minutes from Orchard station.  Do yourself a favour and take a taxi from the airport.  Taxis are not very expensive and if your company is going to pay for it, why not?  If you are travelling in a group, then the cost would be a little more than taking the train but not too much.  Most people, I imagine, would take a taxi to get there and next time I certainly will.  When I got to Orchard Station, I was completely at a loss as to how to get to my hotel.  I forgot where it was and I didn’t have internet service to check on my phone.  I went into ION Orchard and got directions but the “wonderful” concierge lady had such a thick accent that I couldn’t figure out what she was saying.  I ended up going the wrong way as she couldn’t say “head down Orchard.  Orchard turns into Tangling and the hotel is at the end of the street”.  Instead, she said, “Traders is on Tangling St.” to which I asked, “Tangling St, I need to go to Orchard?” and she replied, “No, Tangling Street”.  Maybe she thought Tangling St. started from the intersection where I came out but it took about 20 minutes longer to get to my hotel compared to what it should have taken.  Thankfully the doorman of another hotel got me pointed in the right direction.

The only bad thing about Traders is the location.  It is located at a major intersection but there are few people there.  It is hard to get there if it is your first time and walking to Orchard is not easy in the heat of Singapore.  It can be a blessing as you can enjoy the walk and you do work off a lot of the food that you have eaten.  The rooms are pretty quiet, even with the traffic outside.  I didn’t hear any cars outside my entire stay.  The hotel is also part of a shopping complex, but the shopping complex was not very good to be honest.  There are a few shops but I wouldn’t do a lot of shopping there.  The supermarket is not the best in the world and you need a little time to familiarize yourself with the mall as some shops are not as easy to access compared to others.  It felt a bit upscale overall but the prices were not too bad.  I felt I could get better prices if I went a little farther away but that is the price you pay for being in Orchard.  It could have easily been worse.  If I was more centrally located, there may not have been any supermarkets at all.  While the location can be a bit of a bad side, it is definitely better located for people wishing to go to the botanical gardens.  The botanical gardens are pretty close to the hotel and it is a short walk to get there.  I wouldn’t have visited the gardens unless I was staying at Traders so that was a plus for the location.

The facilities of the hotel were pretty good.  They offer all of the regular amenities, including the luxury of hearing the TV in the bathroom via a speaker.  I’m not too sure why they do this in luxury hotels but it was an interesting option.  The quality of the shampoo and soap were pretty good and probably on par with the regular Shangri-la chain.  I chose Traders because it was reasonably priced for the area and they had a pool.  I arrived in Singapore on an overnight flight and I really wanted to relax by the pool on my first morning.  I made sure I used the pool both days I was there.  The first day I watched a movie and took a short nap and the second day I just hung out to burn time.  The pool itself is really nice, clean, and a bit chilly.  The winds can make it feel a bit cold but I was there during a time the weather wasn’t too hot.  I went to Traders before going to Nikoi Island.  After my trip to Nikoi Island, Singapore got hotter so the pool would have been a lot better at that time.  They do provide free towels and you do have to check in with the pool “boy” but there really isn’t any need to worry about using the facilities.  Do be aware that the local wildlife such as birds show up and some areas, especially next to the plants, have a lot of mosquitoes.

The restaurants and bar at the Traders Hotel isn’t too bad either.  Ah Hoi’s is located poolside and this can be pretty good.  It is a Singaporean Chinese restaurant and it is known for their chili crab.  I did order it but be very aware that the food is designed more for families.  I didn’t mind the portions but for 2 people, it was a LOT of food.  The bar isn’t too bad but I was a little disappointed in the service that the front desk gave me.  I asked if they would be showing the motorcycle race on the TV but they ended up showing football instead.  While I didn’t mind, I was a little annoyed that they didn’t bother to coordinate the information or properly check the information.  I watched the girl check on the internet and they said yes, they would show it, but they didn’t.  I was glad I went early to make sure as I headed up the street to another bar to watch the race instead.  It wasn’t a big problem, and I was on vacation, but if I wasn’t such a good person, I might have caused a fuss.  A simple miscommunication can cause problems and sour a person’s vacation.

As I mentioned earlier, I would stay in Traders again if I had the chance.  While I won’t go out of my way to stay there, I won’t go out of my way to avoid it either.  In Tokyo, or Japan for that matter, it is unlikely that I would go to a Shangri-la or Traders hotel at all.  The chain has lived up to my expectations and when I read stories on Tripadvisor of people who had a bad experience, I can’t imagine why.  Some people are just picky, I guess.  If you are in Singapore and you want to stay in Orchard, you can always consider Traders Hotel.  It is a good hotel with slightly older rooms but it is still a good place.
